Key Characteristics of a Gravel Bikes
Gravel bikes typically feature a relatively long wheelbase and low bottom bracket, which provide stability and comfort across rough terrain. A sloping top tube reduces weight and adds compliance due to the use of a longer seatpost.
Compared to a road bike or cyclocross bike, gravel bike frames have clearance for large tires, up to 50mm and wider. The larger tires offer extra traction and help smooth out rough terrain, which can reduce fatigue over long rides. Narrower tires are lighter and more aerodynamic and may be a better option for smoother, faster surfaces when speed matters most.
Gravel bikes typically feature a single chainring drivetrain, which can help avoid dropped chains and avoid alignment issues. Compared to a cyclocross bike, a gravel bike has a wider range of gears for longer, steeper climbs.
Suspension on gravel bikes is not the norm, yet it is growing in popularity. Giant’s Revolt X features a short-travel 40mm suspension fork, which improves handling and control but adds a little weight. The Revolt Advanced series features a rigid composite fork, which is lighter and more efficient but doesn’t offer the same level of impact absorption.
